Greetings from Orlando, FL, where Gartner Symposium and ITexpo 2013 kicked off this morning with keynotes from Gene Hall, Gartner CEO, and various Gartner executives and researchers. This year's theme is Leading in a Digital World by leveraging disruptive technology innovations to enable the Internet of Things, including cloud computing, mobile devices, social collaboration, and big data. As the traditional analog world we live in becomes increasingly digital, the evolution to what Gartner coined as the digital industrial economyis inevitable.

What is the digital industrial economy? According to Peter Sondergaard,SVP, Head of Research at Gartner, it involves digitization of company assets and information to transform the business, generate value, and deliver better products, services, and customer experiences. While traditional CIOs and CTOs focus on back-office operations and internal users, today's IT executives need to focus on enabling better front-office engagements for customers and partners.

Gartner VP and Research Fellow, Hong LeHong, followed Sondergaard's keynote with an engaging glimpse into the future with beautifully rendered 3D animation and compelling storytelling. In thisscenario, buildings enables after-hour security setting automatically, car drives and navigates itself, sensors scan and compare parking garage fees to pick the most affordable one for the car owner.

While technology is the enabler to create new products, metrics, and opportunities to deliver new products and services, LeHong stressed the importance of paring technology with business strategy to innovate. Specifically, he called out the importance of digitizing Business Processes to understand operations, bottlenecks, and opportunities for improvement. Secondly, LeHong talked about the need to come up with new Business Models by continuously learning about new technologies and constantly reinventing the status quo to stay ahead of the game. Lastly, CEOs and IT executives should not be afraid to seize opportunities to create better customer experiences by delivering digital Business Moments that delight end users.
