Laborers’ International Union of North America Going Mobile and Paperless while Ensuring Data Integrity and Accessibility
Reston, Va.— September 9, 2013 – Appian, the market leader in modern business process management (BPM) software, today announced the Laborers’ International Union of North America (LiUNA) is modernizing its Membership Management System using the Appian Cloud platform. Appian’s combination of process automation, deep data integration, native mobile application access and a social collaboration interface supports LiUNA’s goal to modernize business processes and leverage technology to increase efficiency and effectiveness of service delivery to its members.
LiUNA is one of the most diverse and fastest-growing unions in North America, representing more than 500,000 construction workers, public employees and mail handlers. The union is dedicated to fighting for better wages and benefits, safer job sites, and increased opportunity for the men and women who do the hard and dangerous work of building the North American nations.
“The success of everything LiUNA does as an organization is dependent on the integrity of our membership data, and the speed at which we can organize and advocate for our members,” said Matt Richard, Chief Information Officer, LiUNA. “Appian Cloud will deliver a comprehensive 21st Century enterprise process and data management system, while simultaneously reducing the burden on our internal IT staff.”
LiUNA strives to keep on pace with new technology and application environments that will further enhance its ability to serve its membership. Recently, LiUNA’s legacy application environment was in need of an upgrade, and its mobile tools had a limited set of capabilities that needed to be expanded upon to accommodate a growing mobile workforce. Likewise, the reporting capabilities within the existing tools made analyzing membership trends or to quickly organizing targeted political and legislative action an intensive and time consuming process. A number of paper-based business processes needed to be changed in order to gain efficiencies in back office functions.
LiUNA selected Appian to accelerate processes and eliminate paper through process automation. LiUNA also saw that Appian would enable real-time, accurate data, as well as mobile campaign organization in the field. Because LiUNA’s workforce is almost entirely in the field on a daily basis, the union needed a tool that was easy to use on any mobile platform. Appian’s unique worksocial capabilities will connect local unions, district councils, and LiUNA leadership to increase collaboration throughout the organization. LiUNA chose cloud delivery to accelerate development and deployment, and provide predictable per-user subscription pricing. In addition, Appian’s portable cloud architecture will allow seamless transition to an on-premise environment should LiUNA ever desire that.
“LiUNA’s Appian BPM program exemplifies the power and value of our integration of work automation with the four major IT forces of mobile, social, cloud and data,” said Matt Calkins, president and CEO of Appian.
