Greetings from Appian World and The Diplomat Beach Resort on South Ocean Drive In Hollywood, FL USA!
Yes, yesterday was the official kickoff for this three-day event, as we rolled out the red carpet for Appian World fans. But it’s time to get down to business as Appian plays host to over a thousand customers, partners, thought leaders, and visionaries with all the energy and excitement of a live event.
Last year’s edition of Appian World was held online amid the COVID-19 pandemic. In fact, the conference has been virtual for the last two years. So, this year’s return to a hybrid format was hotly anticipated. As always, there’s just no way to check out everything on the action-packed agenda. But the combination of live and digital formats allowed folks who missed must-see sessions to view them later on-demand.
Kudos to the bevy of brave 5k runners who kicked things off at the crack of dawn—proceeds from the run will be donated to ITWomen, a non-profit organization focused on expanding career opportunities for women in the technology industry. After the 5k and conference registration, it was time to tune into the thought-provoking keynote of Appian CEO Matt Calkins which set the tone for the rest of the conference. In wide-ranging and timely remarks, Calkins reminded us that we live in a world of exponential change and that every organization now needs the capability to reinvent itself in a flash.
“Low-code is not just workflow anymore,” said Calkins. Low-code is robotic process automation, it’s artificial intelligence, it’s intelligent document processing, it’s process mining, and Appian offers all of these capabilities on the same platform. So, we’ve essentially turned low-code into a change engine. It’s more powerful than before, but it’s also more accessible. It’s empowering. It makes developers far more productive, but it enables non-developers as well. Bottom line—we’re adding value to human labor,” said Calkins
“Low-code is a powerful way to democratize development and expand career opportunities for students, veterans and others,” said Calkins. “We’re in a moment of flux in the economy. People are seeking new jobs and more fulfilling work. And one way to do that is by leveraging powerful and easy-to-learn technology like low-code, which is why we’re in the process of giving away a thousand free scholarships to train students and veterans for low-code certification,” said Calkins.
Without getting into the weeds of specific keynotes and sessions, perhaps the best thing about experiencing day two of Appian World was the sense of connectedness that came with rubbing elbows again with Appian fans who flew in from all over the world. It was something of a family reunion which amplified Connected Possibilities as the perfect theme for this year’s event. Next up: Conference Party tonight at Marlins Park.
