Machine-2-machine communication is a vital part of many sectors. In such settings, automation and orchestration technology is combined with robust network systems to allow machines to be controlled remotely and respond to basic day-to-day functions without direct user input. This creates extremely efficient operational climates in a variety of sectors, such as manufacturing.

M2M communication and data gathering

These sophisticated machines, however, do more than just build things or maintain operations. They also collect data. This information plays a key role in helping the machines make the correct decisions based on their automation software, but can also help companies make better strategic decisions and improve processes. According to a recent study from Axeda Corporation, the integration of M2M data with CRM and ERP applications can enable more social and efficient enterprise operations.

Organizations working to take these initial gains and translate them into truly social operations and streamlined functionality often benefit substantially by combining this M2M and CRM/ERP integration with business process management software, which streamlines data integration across the entire operational landscape.

Importance of integration

The study found that many organizations are beginning to prioritize finding a way to use data integration and automation tools to find a way to socialize machine data. This means using the information gathered in various M2M functions to enhance operations in other areas, such as research and development.

Dan Murphy, vice president of marketing for Axeda, explained that effective use of M2M data can contribute to business growth.

"When savvy M2M adopters use machine data to unify functional roles within their organization, it accelerates growth, creates opportunities for brand differentiation and impacts the company's core culture by creating a social enterprise," said Murphy. "Having insight into how each and every customer interacts with your products is an enormous competitive advantage, and sharing that advantage across the enterprise enhances all business functions."

Importance of BPM solutions

The approach suggested by the study focuses on the first level of data integration - getting information delivered between distinct technological areas. While this is a vital step to using information effectively, BPM software takes the procedure to another level by using automation to make the integration more intelligent in nature. This ensures that various workers get the data they need to handle their day-to-day processes more effectively, not just have more information at their fingertips.
