Appian Environmental Policy

Our Focus on Environmental Sustainability

Appian is committed to managing environmental impact as an integral part of our operations. We strive to ensure the environmental integrity of our processes and facilities at all times, and we comply with all regulations ensuring a safe working environment for our personnel in each country and city in which we operate. A committee within our board of directors, chaired by one of the company’s co-founders and our Chief Financial Officer, focuses on and directs corporate efforts and activities surrounding carbon reduction and environmental sustainability.

Specifically, Appian has taken action, and continues to do so, to reduce our energy consumption and waste and contribute to climate preservation. We have begun to track Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for our United States headquarters operation and will be extending this to all office locations over time. With respect to Scope 3 carbon emissions, we are working with our infrastructure hosting service provider for the Appian Cloud Software-as-aService offering, Amazon Web Services (AWS), to be able to offer green-centered choices to our customers around cloud deployment.

Additionally, Appian has recently committed to the submission of targets for reducing GHG emissions to the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi), to occur within that organization’s allotted 24-month period. Following submission, SBTi will validate our targets for alignment with climate science and SBTi criteria, after which we will communicate Appian target information to stakeholders and publicly disclose emissions data and progress on an annual basis.

Of note, our facilities and administrative teams around the world are already working with the property managers of our leased spaces to ensure those spaces minimize environmental impact through energy reduction and the efficient use of space. And all products used in Appian office upgrades/buildouts are reviewed for sustainability factors, including the composition of recycled materials and volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions.

Moreover, environmental concerns around reducing energy consumption and waste also factor into Appian procurement decisions, business travel, office operations (for example, implementing energy-saving lighting and window coverings in our facilities worldwide), and employee commuting (promoting the use of public transportation by offsetting those expenses and enabling remote work/telecommuting).

Furthermore, our company-sponsored AppianGreen Affinity Group has been instrumental in promoting sustainable practices across the business to minimize our firm’s waste and energy footprint, focusing on actions, behaviors, and policies to minimize environmental impact and encourage sustainable choices on the part of Appian and our team members.

The above practices contribute to our company’s overarching climate-action strategy. And Appian continually seeks new ways to achieve and expand upon our environmental goals.
