Appian Leads the Way in the Next Evolution of Process Mining

In the late 2010s, process mining emerged as one of the hottest topics in tech. With the concurrent rise of automation technology like robotic process automation, process mining’s applicability to enterprises crystallized. And its value as a process improvement tool quickly attracted the attention of innovators and business leaders.

The process mining tools that were available at the time missed the mark for many businesses. At best, they functioned as a siloed tool for understanding processes and identifying bottlenecks. But most companies lacked the in-house skill set required to derive meaningful insights from process analysis. And even when they did, closing the loop between insight and action has proven difficult in environments where change is constant, resources are limited, and regulations loom large.

This difficulty in using process mining tools effectively underscores the long-standing challenges associated with business process management—an area that Gartner® predicts will continue to pose risks to businesses in the coming years.

Through 2026, insufficient business process management maturity will prevent 90% of organizations from reaching desired business outcomes from their end-to-end process mining initiatives.
 2024 Gartner® Magic Quadrant™ for Process Mining

This year at Appian World, we announced the launch of Process HQ. This next-generation process mining capability combines both process and business data in a single place, automating process analysis and empowering users with intelligent recommendations for where and how to take action. And because it’s part of the Appian Platform, you can immediately apply these improvements to your processes using our AI automation and workflow orchestration capabilities.

Coming off the heels of our Process HQ launch, Appian has now been named a Leader in the 2024 Gartner® Magic Quadrant™ for Process Mining Platforms.

The 2024 Process Mining Magic Quadrant™ offers the Gartner® view of the process mining market and provides an evaluation of 18 recognized process mining vendors.

Appian’s recognition complements our position as a Leader in the Gartner® Magic Quadrant™ for Enterprise Low-code Application Platforms and our #1 ranking for the Business Workflow Automation with Integration Use Case. With our new placement as a Process Mining Magic Quadrant™ Leader, we are demonstrating the end-to-end value that the Appian Platform delivers.

What does this mean for the next wave of process mining technology? And how does it help your business?

When it comes to everyday business decisions like automating processes, we often lean on our gut feelings instead of data. We should commit to using the same rigorous approach to data-driven decision making in familiar territory as we do when facing the unknown. Process HQ is about making every decision more informed, strategic, and likely to lead to success.

1. Get fast answers to business questions.

Building data-rich reports and dashboards for reporting and decision-making can use up a lot of IT resources. But Process HQ changes that.

Think of Process HQ as your mission control for business decisions. It gathers your business and process data, automatically provides relevant insights, and helps you communicate clearly, ensuring that your team can adapt and overcome any challenge.

It does this by surfacing your data fabric and processes in a unified workspace that allows business users to explore data, build custom reports and dashboards, and get AI-generated insights without needing process improvement expertise or developer experience.

2. Fast-track process improvement and innovation.

Preparing process data for analysis is one of the most time-consuming aspects of a traditional process mining project. And once you have it, process analysis can take months. Process HQ helps you mine processes at speed in a few key ways:

  • Always-ready data. Process HQ uses Appian’s underlying data fabric, meaning  you can prep data for mining from multiple sources in just a few clicks.
  • Guided analysis. To simplify the knowledge required for process improvement work, Process HQ provides a guided experience for identifying process problems.
  • Intelligent recommendations. Use AI to dive deeper into process problems and get recommendations for where and how to take action.

3. Design, automate, and optimize on one platform.

Taking action on the insights you uncover is perhaps the biggest process improvement challenge businesses face.

The reasons for this are endless, ranging from ad hoc processes and siloed departmental data to organizational buy-in and limited IT resources. Change is hard for most of us. And improving processes involves changing not only the way people work, but also how your organization operates.

For Appian, helping people build better processes isn’t something new. For 25 years, we’ve been working with innovative organizations around the world to build automation solutions that unlock process potential.

With the addition of Process HQ to the Appian Platform, organizations now have the complete set of capabilities needed for end-to-end process optimization in one place, including the ability to:

  • Design with low-code for fast enterprise application delivery.

  • Automate with AI and workflow orchestration for efficiency.

  • Optimize for results with process mining and enterprise intelligence.

Appian aims to build a new category of holistic process management platform that integrates process mining into the Appian platform. The platform converts any discovered process model automatically into an Appian workflow (model to workflow), mines Appian’s data fabric to obtain end-to-end process insights, and measures the cost savings delivered by an Appian app.
