Gaz Réseau Distribution France (GRDF) is the main natural gas distribution company in France. It designs, builds, operates, and maintains the largest distribution network in Europe (199,781 km)—covering more than 9,500 municipalities—and distributes natural gas from multiple suppliers to more than 11 million customers daily.
European regulations required parent company Engie to legally separate its energy supply and network management activities. It formed GRDF as an independent subsidiary for energy delivery.
Separating operations exposed significant inefficiencies in the legacy information systems. GRDF needed to unify fragmented processes, improve service delivery, and ensure compliance with Commission de Régulation de l'Énergie (CRÉ) requirements.
GRDF used Appian to unify systems and data in adaptable processes. Appian’s process platform has the enterprise scalability to support GRDF’s tens of thousands of daily processes, and the low-code accessibility to make changing those processes fast and easy.
GRDF trained in-house staff on Appian in just two weeks and established a Center of Excellence (CoE). They took an iterative approach to software development, using agile methodology to quickly build applications and test them for user satisfaction.
In their first three years of working with Appian, GRDF developed seven applications. Over time, they have added more applications and scaled Appian adoption to 10,000 users. Today, many of GRDF’s most important processes run on Appian applications, including customer request management, gas network management, and fraud detection.
GRDF achieved the following results with Appian:
Developer staff trained in just 2 weeks
Built 7 Appian applications in the first 3 years
Modernized by moving from legacy systems to Appian
Appian adoption scaled to over 10,000 users
Complied with stringent Commission de Régulation de l'Énergie (CRÉ) requirements
"Appian allows us to innovate more efficiently as a business, which in turn leads to improvements in the way we work. The technology enables us to shorten software development cycles and accelerate our digital transformation efforts."
