Tech Leaders Strain to Deliver in Australia.

This report highlights the crisis facing Australian IT departments. More than their global counterparts, Australian IT teams are under huge strain to deliver on an unsustainable backlog of digital transformation projects. At the same time, they are losing control of the digital infrastructure to business-led application development. Simultaneously, business leaders say that applications and the IT infrastructure need to be better at adapting to change.

Why read the report?
The need for business agility, spurred by COVID, is causing IT to forge a new role based on its ability to deliver organizational resilience. To understand this shift and what it means for IT/business collaboration, The Economist Intelligence Unit, supported by Appian, conducted a global survey and a series of in-depth interviews with Australian IT and business decision-makers at major corporations. Results show that:
- 85% of Australian tech leaders report that growth in business project requests dwarfs IT budget growth (significantly higher than the global response of 64%).
- With an IT backlog of three months to a year, 63% of Australian executives agree that non-IT business units take the lead in procuring or developing most of the applications that they use (more than the global average of 55%). The sentiment is strongest among Australian IT decision-makers, three quarters (76%) of whom agree.
- 71% of business leaders report they have had to cancel a digital business project because the solution couldn’t access the right data (much higher than the global average of 54%).
- Four in five Australian business leaders believe that their organisation needs to improve its IT infrastructure and applications in order to better adapt to external change.
