Business process management (BPM) software solutions can enhance operations in organizations, helping to streamline the basic tasks to provide quality improvements and increases in productivity. BPM recently helped The Royal British Legion, a charity in the UK, upgrade and improve its budgeting process. The charity provides aid to those who served in the armed forces, helping veterans in need who are concerned about money, need emotional support or a little help around the house.
According to KMWorld, The Royal British Legion's old system was outdated. Not only was it time consuming for administrators, with features such as password protects, but it wasn't very transparent, which caused issues as the charity sought to provide clarity.
"Much of the finance department's time was wasted administering the process and reminding people of their passwords," said Faheem Nusrat, a SharePoint consultant with The Royal British Legion, according to the news source. "As a charity, it was important for The Royal British Legion to be accountable and demonstrate transparency in its financial process."
An efficient financial management solution
Because of the new system, the charity's financial process was able to run smoother and more efficiently. "I estimate that the financial department has gained over 300 hours per year," said Nusrat. "This time saving enables the finance team to focus on deeper budget management issues and other strategic tasks that are of more importance to the organization as a whole."
Any organization that turns to BPM is likely to see opportunities in other areas that were previously slowed by manual tasks. According to KM World, The Royal British Region is enjoying better management of finances and accounting, more transparency and visibility and substantial increases in efficiency.
How will enterprises integrate BPM in the future?
Even though BPM is helping organizations to improve, it's still unclear how the technology will evolve. According to ZDNet, there's a fair amount of disagreement about whether BPM will continue to provide businesses with the solutions they need, as new advances in technology are introduced to enterprises. Mobile computing, changes in IT infrastructure and other innovations may be integrated into BPM solutions in coming years, the news source reported. As 2012 draws to a close, IT decision-makers and business executives should consider how BPM solutions may improve company operation in 2013.
