As I previously blogged, Forrester Research has published some eye-opening stats about the growing mobile workforce. 70% of information workers in North America work remotely at least once a month, and "Hyper-Mobile Professionals" already constitute 33% of the workforce. According to the report's author, T.J. Keitt, commercial and government leaders need to keep up with the pace by provisioning the mobile workforce properly. Appian's mobile BPM software can help.
On the government side, the General Services Administration (GSA) is trying to help federal agencies provide what people now expect in terms of the availability of government data and services on iPhones, iPads, Androids and other mobile devices through its Making Mobile Gov project.
Federal Computer Week recently discussed the Forrester report, concluding that "IT leaders need to judge how to develop the corporate IT infrastructure, evaluate the devices that IT should or shouldn't support, plan content and collaboration strategies to keep workers connected, and anticipate how facilities' costs will change. Mr. Keitt notes in his blog, "If business leaders and their counterparts in IT are to get in front of this trend, they have to understand their mobile and remote workforce."
Sounds like a daunting challenge for agencies and commercial organizations, but Appian's native mobile BPM provides a solution that reduces the complexity. Delivering native mobile apps for all popular devices, and eliminating the high cost of mobile development, these applications have an intuitive Facebook-like interface that the mobile generation expects. But despite the simplicity of the user experience, these are powerful applications that offer deep integration to back-end corporate systems and processes.
The "Hyper-Mobiles" are already here, and their numbers will only grow. As today's young people enter the workforce, the notion of being able to work from any location, using any interface to corporate IT, is not just an employment benefit ñ it's an expectation of how work will be conducted in general.
